Wondering if I will end up with a house husband

January 13th, 2009 at 09:52 pm

My husband is reaching that point with his job where he has frequent nightmares about it, not exactly a healthy position to be in. Would love for him to hold out to June (decent EF and no credit cards at that point) but we will see what happens.

When I was at that point, I didn't last very long and was lucky that I had another position mostly lined up. I ended up being unemployed for only two weeks. But somehow I think he might have a longer hunt. He seriously job hunted for a little bit and that never panned out.

Fortunately, we can get by on just my income. If he holds out till June, I am all for him quitting outright and taking his time so he can recover from the burn out. My big issue is that I want the debt gone and the ef replenished in case something goes wrong.

He could probably get another job in his current field because he has contacts but I am betting he is just burned out on the field. Poor man, this really has gone on too long. I just wish it wasn't the most absolute worst time to be job hunting because its not going to help his ego to be turned down alot.

I told him that if he becomes a house husband, I want 3 course meals. The rest I couldn't care less about but that is what it is going to take to keep me from eating out. :P

I know several families that have SAHDs and life is good for them. In this day and age, it is becoming more common and not a big deal as long as there is harmony and agreement about the situation.

    Whitestripe,

I work for a homebuilders in house mortgage company.... so probably one of the most stressful fields to be in right now with the exception of maybe the auto industry....

Remember that sanity is worth something too. If he is getting sick from stress, and the stress is widespread in the field, he isn't going to escape it by going somewhere else and be a good worker for anyone in his field.

Tactically, a break could be good. Stress causes tunnel vision. He can get rested and is more able to pursue contacts in an allied field - say, a company that specializes in rebuilding/ renovating foreclosures, for instance.

cylenchar: wow i understand now! a lot of people i know who work in that industry, even in australia, which wasnt hit as hard as the US, have left because of stress and gone to work in pubs or the service industry, just because they dont want the pressure. and they are a lot happier.

If you don't mind me asking, can I ask what field this is?

In any case, when you start having nightmares about your job, it's time to move on....

I'm so sorry to hear what you are both going through right now. My husband is kind of in the same boat, although not in such a volatile industry. He's just fed up with the childishness at his job and this is NOT the field he wants to be working in. It's just really tough right now to give up a good paying job! Too many people don't even have jobs now. Feeling stuck isn't helping DH's mentality and I'm sure you must be having similar feelings. Hang in there - whatever you decide!!
