How do you cure your foul moods?

April 10th, 2009 at 05:21 pm

I tend to spring clean. Tends to burn off the energy I build as I work myself into a frenzy. I ask because my mood is growing blacker by the moment and blogging and working on paperwork isn't exactly curing it. I wish I was at home so I could scrub floors, work on much needed projects and generally accomplish something with this foul mood.

You should see all the posts I wrote before this, definitely not nice. So what about it, what do you do for foul moods that just won't listen to reason?

I guess I am very lucky, I never get foul moods!

I either eat or exercise. (Which is good - the 2 even out. I was just thinking about this the other day). The best foul mood "cure" is hugging my kids though. Big Grin They are still at that super cuddly stage. Not sure what I will do when they outgrow that. Hit the gym more I guess.

I just had a load of sugar and caffeine which is finally starting to help but generally I prefer the exercise/movement method myself.

When things get extreme for me, I have to go out and run. Run fast, run far. Run until I'm too dead tired to care either way. I don't necessarily recommend it, but it will work.

What I tend to do when in a "mood":
    Eat junkfood, lots of it.
Hibernate in bed - sometimes actually sleeping, others not

What actually gets me out of the mood:
    exercise
    pounding a pillow
    screaming into a pillow
writing out long litanies that no one else usually ever ever sees

    hmmmm.
a good long walk, listening to music on my ipod, usually on the beach as it is calming and there aren't many people there.
or if i don't feel like walking, then just sitting on the beach, or in a park, or by myself at a cafe with a coffee and my sunglasses just people-watching. it helps to calm me as i just think about complete strangers and what they might be doing in their day to day lives.

painting or drawing, even if it ends up me just hurling paint at the canvas (this does happen sometimes, yes) Big Grin
writing a list. it doesn't matter what list, it could be a grocery list, a list of things to do, a list of things to buy, etc.

and yes, cleaning or sorting always helps.

but i do recommend listening to music. it always helps me. but try to make it something opposite to your mood. if you are feeling sad, listen to upbeat music. if you are feeling fidgety, listen to relaxing music. if you are feeling rightly pissed off though - i find it does help to listen to something angry lol. weird that!

I go for a walk and count the steps until the monotony of it takes away all other thoughts. Or I go for a drive by myself and let out a loud scream or yell - that relieves a surprising amount of stress. Music is a good one too. Loud 80's rock music from my younger days. I get so involved in the music and memories it brings back that it makes me feel better.

I first look at the calendar. Uncle Grumpy usually shows up two or three days before Aunt Flo. The realization usually snaps me out of that "I'm gonna kill someone" tape that runs over and over. Oh, and I love heavy metal in a mood like that.

If I am really mad, I put on some Metallica, and then after about three songs, I realize I am not THAT mad Smile
