Thinking of doing a budget diet...

November 10th, 2009 at 06:44 pm

By that I mean, cut our allowance for the months of December and January to $100 per week (includes groceries). It would let us build up some more savings so that I felt more secure. I think I have just gotten used to having a set amount of money in savings and would like to keep it that way.

Those two months don't involve a whole lot going on so it would make it easier to stick to as well. I have also been cutting back on the eating out because I don't need to be eating all that junk food.

The advantage here is that since I am the big spender and instigator, if I cut back, our expenses go down. I will have to see how it works out...

We did similar temporary budget cuts to replenish the EF after some unexpected expenses came up. It worked out great. One of the cuts ($200 less for grocery/household each month) we decided to keep permanently, or at least for the foreseeable future, and put that money toward debt or savings. Some of the other discretionary spending we're reinstating, and it feels newly luxurious, so we get to enjoy it even more than before we cut it out!

That's what I am hoping it will do for us as well. It also helps my stress level to do this because then its no big deal that we had a bunch of things come up that were not originally part of the budget.

I am thinking of doing the same thing too. our EF has depleted rapidly and is floating at the moment. even though it's more money than i have ever had in the bank on my own, it still makes me nervous, because it's the least we've had since we bought our house and combined finances.

I am on a 1 year diet. I am on my 6th week. It is becoming second nature. Just set your mind to it and you can accomplish it!
