Anyone know what clothes actually last?

November 6th, 2007 at 08:16 pm

I don't know if anyone else has this problem, but I tend to wear out clothes. I wear them until the hems shred, the fabric stretches beyond recognition and holes appear everywhere. I hate clothes shopping so I keep trying to find brands that hold up over time and I have got to say, they all fall apart equally fast. It doesn't matter if the item cost $2 or $100, I have had both disintegrate equally fast.

So, obviously I am going back to cheaper clothing to avoid the break down issue becoming a money drain issue but I really do hate clothes shopping so frequently. Anyone have any brands that they think will hold up so I don't have to replace them constantly? Keep in mind I have a professional job so my clothes need to be somewhat nice but nothing to spiffy. I am a pretty casual girl.

Well, any suggestions?

I am not sure if you have an Ann Taylor Loft anywhere near you but I tend to get all my clothes for work from there and have never had a problem. They have dressy or casual clothes and their pieces aren't fad-ish so they tend to stay in style season after season. Better yet, if you have an outlet mall nearby they may have an outlet store. That's where I have done some serious damage in the past and I hope that's where it stays...the past. I don't allow myself to go in the store anymore Smile One question for you, how can you hate shopping for clothes?! Need a personal shopper?!
    Anyways, good luck to you!

I buy a lot of Land's End clothing and have been happy with it. Also, there is a Brooks Brothers outlet near me. When they have a good sale (and it has to be a good sale, otherwise I can't justify their price), I stock up on button down shirts. They wash up very nicely.

I work on a construction site as a field engineer, so I tend to be a bit rougher on clothing than your average office worker. But both those brands have held up nicely over the years.

Actually clubneary, Ann Taylor was the place where I was getting the expensive clothes that weren't holding up. Love the styles but some of their items just can't take what I dish out. I do shop at Ross where things are always cheaper and namebrand but that requires me to shop often. Why do I ate shopping? Partly because I am so picky about what I wear. I have to try things on every time because sizes vary dramatically and I just don't enjoy fru fru. I purposely avoid stores when pastels are all the rage. *Shudder*

Thank skydivingchick, I will check those two out.

Bummer! Sorry to hear about Ann Taylor. I haven't had a problem with them as long as I follow the directions on how to wash them. I agree with you about the pastels-never a good look unless you are under the age of 3. It is amazing how sizes are different depending on where you shop. That's one of the reasons I like ATL-I usually wear a smaller size there Smile Good luck with your quest for fashionable clothing that lasts!
