Me? Yeah not so much. Somehow my father and I got on the topic of laundry and I mentioned how rather than going out and spending hundreds of dollars on a dryer, I have a clothes line in my basement and we hang dry everything.
My father chuckled about his too frugal daughter. Is it really that weird that I don't have a dryer? I know the handyman we hired to put our ventilation in was deeply offended that we don't have a dryer but our handymen also liked to live the good life and have much more expensive homes than us.
Its just weird to me that anyone would think I am frugal. I have a lot of toys and I pay for them by not spending a fortune on things I don't care about.
I mean, I knew people who have cars thought it was weird that I lived without a car for forever (and still think its weird that I take the bus instead of the car to work) but a dryer? When did that become a necessity? Am I the only one who grew up with clothes lines (Dad claims mom grew tired of the work after awhile)?
Anyways, I know my dad isn't frugal (my husband was surprised he knew the meaning of the word) but I am a little surprised that so many people think a dryer is a necessity.
No Dryer is Too Frugal?

With 4 kids and not to much re-wearing of clothing I do 3 or more loads every weekday...I don't have enough room to line dry them.
Though if I could I would.

Having five kids and doing a six month stint without a dryer, I do not believe that it is a necessity. However, I like laundry, and like princess perky, I do four loads a day.
I think having a system in place helps greatly. I knew where the socks went (hanging over the tub in one bathroom), undergarmets (my bathroom), everything else went on hangers. It did take a bit of planning (like gym clothes needed to be washed the day they were brought home so they could be dry for the next time they are needed).
DH did fix my dryer, but if it broke again, I wouldn't be wringing my hands in despair.
I think it has to do with the mentality of frugalness.

Towels, sheets, jeans, socks. That's about it.

in summer i line dry everything/dry it outside. i love the smell of sheets dried outside when i crawl in to bed. my dream when i buy a house is a super efficient side loader washing machine like my house sitting job has. When i take my clothes out of their washer they are almost dry give them an hour and they are.
The only reason i would get a dryer is if i had a room mate, it is kind of expected that you have a dryer. I do want this ceiling mounted clothes rack dryer thing from william sonoma. i always look for a laundry room that is tall/big enough to have it installed. and i would buy it someplace else cheaper.

CouponAddict, you have my sympathies. My household has major allergies but ours are mostly indoor and the lack of carpet has vastly improved that problem. Fortunately, line drying has never been a problem inside or out despite all our allergies.

So one more reason not to line dry...though like I said I wish I could.

so I must be the only other weird person here
sure, one day when I have hundreds of dollars to spare (or however much they cost plus electricity per year) I may just get one.
But at the moment, it is at the very bottom of my to-buy list. In fact, it probably does not even enter the list. I could think of a million things I would rather buy.
The climate where I live is very unpredictable: it could be a clear day in the morning, and by 10am it will be pouring with rain. So no one can tell me I live in an 'easy' climate to work with laundry-wise. The first house we lived in was small. It had a line outside, and we had a shed. The shed made our clothes smell like... shed. So instead, we hung our clothes up all over the house inside. There were three of us living there - and DF and I both have to change immediately after we get home from work - DF being a tradesman and I working in a hot kitchen. I would say we did close to 2 loads of washing a day.
The next house was larger so we could hang our clothes in the garage and they would still smell ok.
Our new house, well, it has been raining non-stop since we moved in, I have managed to do three loads of essentials since then. I have worn clothes lately that I had forgotten I had. But would I buy a dryer? Nope!

The Paris hotel we stayed at had a secret clothesline in the bathroom. This was Paris, France, not Paris, Texas, so I think you are in good company.
I'm surprised that people are less surprised that you can survive without a car than without a dryer. Most people consider me a freak for not having a car.
